Residential Dryer Vent Cleaning in the Phoenix Valley

Once a year for a typical single-family household. Homes running more than five loads a week, households with pets, and any home with a vent run longer than 15 feet should move to every six to nine months.

Phoenix adopted the 2024 Phoenix Building Construction Code effective 1 August 2025; the requirement carries over from earlier editions. Over-length runs are common in two-story homes where the laundry is upstairs and the vent terminates at the roof, and the code requires a permanent placard identifying the equivalent length within 6 feet of the dryer connection when it exceeds 35 feet. If your run is over the limit, that is a finding worth knowing about whether or not you hire anyone — it changes how often the vent needs attention.

Rigid metal with a smooth interior, at least 0.0157 inch thick (28 gage), 4 inches nominal diameter. Flexible foil and plastic transition ducts do not meet this — the ribbed interior catches lint, which is the mechanism behind most vent blockages. Code also prohibits joining duct with screws or fasteners that protrude more than an eighth of an inch inside, for the same reason: anything sticking into the airflow becomes the point where lint starts to build. The termination must sit at least 3 feet from any opening into the building, including ventilated soffits.

Honestly: probably a little, but nobody can promise you a number, and anyone who does is guessing. Here is what is actually established. A blocked vent restricts airflow, and restricted airflow is why a load starts needing two cycles to dry — that part you can observe yourself, and running the dryer twice plainly costs more than running it once. What is not established is a measured dollar figure. The Department of Energy looked for that data and reported that nobody had information on measured energy savings from proper venting, and its own testing did not show a clean relationship between restricted venting and longer drying times. So treat the power bill as a likely side benefit, not the reason. The documented reason is fire: the DOE attributes roughly 15,000 dryer fires a year in the U.S. to reduced airflow from lint blockage or improper venting. If your loads need two cycles, the vent is telling you something worth acting on either way.
